摘要

Forestation in rivers has often been reported by river administrative bureaus in Japan since the 1990s. Generally, it causes several problems such as negative impact on ecosystem conservation and reduced flow capacity. The mechanism of forest formation has been investigated extensively in Japan: In the Asahi River, a first-grade river in Japan, several gravel bars were selected as experimental sites to clarify the mechanisms and to estimate the sustained effects of restoration works, which are often conducted for vegetated rivers. Generally, engineering works for restoration require high costs and much time. Thus, clarifying how the river bed is covered again with vegetation is necessary to find a workable solution for effective restoration.
