During overbank flood flow over a permeable floodplain water infiltrates into the subsurface, where it is temporarily stored. This phenomenon is often neglected in conventional flood inundation models. On the other hand catchment-scale hydrological simulation models often account for subsurface flow and surface-subsurface interactions. However, except for a couple of exceptions (Steenhauer et al, 2012,Jens-Olaf et al, 2013), these models assume that the air in the subsurface is at atmospheric pressure and it is free to move at sufficient speed to not influence water migration.
