Hydrometric current meters are used to study river hydrodynamics and are often calibrated in tow tanks. Newer instruments based on magnetoinductive or acoustic principles can measure very slow velocities, down to 0.1 mm/s, and a good quantification of the water disturbances in the tank is mandatory to assess the achievable precision during a calibration.
