This paper deals with the behavior of the recirculation zones occurring downstream sudden lateral expansions (Figure 1). Such recirculations are essential in river engineering. For instance,they form silting zones which importance depends on the downstream extent of the recirculation. These dead zones also favor the development of specific fauna and flora, which is influenced by the exchanges through the mixing layer separating the main flow and the recirculation. Finally, they present strong analogies with recirculations taking place within groyne fields used for river engineering.
