Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Clinical experience clearly indicates that majority of CRC patients would benefit from curative surgery with a five-year survival ratesof around 80-90% if diagnosed in earlier stages. Conventional screening for CRC relies on the colonoscopy and immunochemical fecal occult blood test (iFOBT). However, colonoscopy, the current gold standard method, has low cost-effectiveness while the popular iFOBT assay has limited diagnostic accuracy for early stage CRC. We reasoned that microRNAs may serve as ideal markers for non-invasive CRC detection due to their roles in tumor pathogenesis and their outstanding stability in various body fluids. Therefore, this study evaluated the expression pattern of several promising microRNAs in the paired plasma and stool samples from CRC patients.
