Free radial forearm flap versus pectoralis major miocutaneus flap in tongue reconstruction: The evaluation of tongue recovery
The extensive surgical resection and radiotherapy in patients affected by oral cancer cause a reduction of tongue function. Pedicled flaps, amongst all the pectoralis major miocutaneous flap (PMMF) and/or free flap, as the free radial forearm flap (FRFF), have been defined for the repair of post-operative defects in order to achieve a better restoration of oral functions. The aim of our study is to compare postoperative tongue mobility in patients that, after surgery for tongue cancer removal, have been reconstructed with these two different techniques and eventual underwent adjuvant radiotherapy. No significant differences were found in mean speech intelligibility, swallowing and chewing functions between patients reconstructed with RFF or PMMF, except in cases of front partial emiglossectomy, in whom RFF figured out to be more effective.
