Objective: To evaluate the effects of health education intervention for the diabetic elderly patients in community. Method: One hundred and thirty six elderly diabetic patients were randomly selected from four communities in Fengman District of Jilin City and divided the patients into intervention group and control group. The intervention group was given health education lectures about how to control the development of diabetes; the control group did not take any measures. Patients' cognition scores, health-related behavior scores, fasting blood-glucose (FBG), and postprandial blood-glucose within 2 h (P2hBG) were used to appraise among two groups. Results: After the health education intervention, the cognitive scores and health-related behavior scores of the intervention group were significantly higher than its before intervention (P<0.01). FBG and P2hBG of intervention group was lower than that before intervention (P<0.05), but the cognitive scores, health-related behavior scores, FBG and P2hBG of the control group had on difference comparing with that before intervention (P>0.05). Conclusion: Health education intervention played an active role for the elderly diabetic patients in community to improve their cognitive level, their self-management level, and effectively control their blood glucose (BG). The innovation of this paper is that the health education intervention for diabetic elderly patients in community was based on their cognitive level which is about diabetes and their health-related behaviors.
