Gelatin zymography (SDS-PAGE enzymograph) was applied to determine theexpression of MMP-9 at different time points in cerebral ischemia/reperfusioninjury and the effect of Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) on the expression of MMP-9was investigated to explore protective mechanisms of GbE on the cerebralischemia/reperfusion injury. The results showed that there may be a dynamicchange process of MMP-9 expression within certain duration after cerebralischemia/reperfusion in rats and the change may follow a change rule, in whichthe expression of MMP-9 can be earlier and the time phase should be consistentwith that of vasogenic edema. GbE can inhibit the overexpression of MMP-9maybe through its anti-infection, anti-inflammation, anti-cerebral edema, andimprovement of the water content in ischemic brain tissues and the permeabilityof capillaries in brain tissues, thereby reducing the upregulation expressionextent.
