摘要

Approximately 70 percent of healthcare costs are due to lifestyle and are therefore potentially preventable. The current healthcare approach favors "sick care," which is inappropriate for the treatment and management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in today's aging population. Randomized controlled trials are impractical to provide the complex evidence needed for personalized lifestyle medicine, leading to significant unmet need to identify the value of lifestyle intervention programs for improving functional health outcomes. A more precise approach to address NCDs would incorporate the 4P medicine or functional medicine principles: personalized, predictive, preventative, and participatory. Increasingly, single-subject studies that follow an individual's unique genetic, biochemical, physiologic, and clinical end points over time are necessary in translational research to demonstrate the efficacy of personalized lifestyle medicine.
