Insecticidal, antifeedant, and larval development effects of polar-varying extracts from Pedicularis spicata on Plutella xylostella were investigated. Insecticidal activity was tested by dipping method and the sequences of contact toxicity was petroleum ester extract>chloroform extract>ethyl acetate extract with the mortalities of 100%, 93.10%, and 22.30%. In no-choice antifeedant test, the three extracts displayed strong antifeedant effects, the 48 h rates of deterring the continuation of feeding reached 69.91%, 72.73%, and 49.35%, respectively. Attributed to the antifeedant action, the development of the larvae of Plutella xylostella was also inhibited, the growth inhibition rates of the three extracts on the larvae were 74.23%, 72.68%, and 55.67%, respectively, pupation rates were reduced to 53.3%, 57.8%, and 73.33%, meanwhile, the adult emerging rates were reduced to 40.0%, 33.3%, and 32.22% compared to the control of 85.56% of pupation rate and 82.22% of adult emerging rate. The results from this study indicate that the extracts, especially the weak-polar extracts display various activities on Plutella Xylostella, which can be used as new natural pesticides for pest control.
