Soil selenium contents, spatial distribution and their influencing factors in Heilongjiang, China

Selenium is unevenly distributed on the surface of the earth. Ure and Berrow (1982) reported a Se concentration range of 0.03-2.0 mg/kg and a mean of 0.40 mg/kg for 1623 soils throughout the world. In China Tan and Zhu (2002) suggested that there existed a low Se disease belt from northeast to southwest with a Se content range of 0.022-3.806 mg/kg. Heilongjiang Province is the national base for the major commodity grain in China, which just lies in the starting end of low Sebelt. Until now, knowledge on the soil Se content at different regions or in soils in Heilongjiang Province are not well documented. The specific objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the total Se content in soils collected from all parts of Heilongjiang Province, and (2) investigate factors in related to the physio-chemical properties of the soils.
