Mechanical Behavior of Epoxy Systems using Microencapsulated Amino-functional Siloxanes

The aim of this study was evaluate the mechanical performance of DGEBA epoxy resin mixed with microencapsulated amine-functionalized polysiloxanes (PDMS-a). A series of poly(urea-formaldehyde)-(PUF) microcapsules, hollow or filled with PDMS-a, were synthesized and dispersed in epoxy resin at various concentrations. Their tensile mechanical properties have been measured and the results show that the microcapsules filled with PDMS-a impart a distinct mechanical behavior to the epoxy system, when compared to those with hollow microcapsules, indicating that the PDMS-a can be an efficient healing agent for epoxy matrices.
