Body-in-white weight reduction strategy leads to introduce of a wide variety of materials which have either an improved mechanical strength, making possible to reduce thicknesses, or a lower density. A broad spectrum of materials and processing route is developed: cold-drawn or hot stamped sheets, extruded profiles, molded or thermoformed components, etc. The varied physical properties of the by-products before joining step require to consider new joining processes. The four years long project "SAM" developed at French institute of technology IRT M2P aims to explore new solutions to assemble steel and aluminum sheets. We present a panorama of the current "mechanical" processes as well as the equipment invested for a dedicated technological platform. We then focus more specifically on the description of two processes that allow an only one face access, i.e joining with high speed nails (tacks) or with flow drill screws. Issues such as the complexity of the process settings, resistance under static load, observed defects, non-destructive control, design constraints are then addressed. A comparative analysis taking into account the technical arguments and economic questions as well as technological locks finally makes it possible to conclude on the current ability of the process to be industrialized.
