Formic acid has a potential as an on-site hydrogen source for fuel cells because it is easy to be stored and transported. Molybdenum carbide is one of non-precious metal based active material for the decomposition of formic acid to produce hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, lignin is considered as an abundant and cheap carbon source, since it is mainly produced in pulp and paper industries as waste. In this work, applicability of lignin as the carbon source and concurrently as a support material for molybdenum carbide catalysts was demonstrated by using alkaline lignin (AL), dealkaline lignin (DAL), and activated carbon (AC). Furthermore, the effect of the carbon sources for catalytic decomposition of formic acid was also investigated.
