Haemophilus parasuis (HPS) continues to challenge swine produces causing systemic disease in pigs. HPS isolates have been classified into 15 serotypes by gel immunodiffusion and hemagglutination.1' The accuracy of these methods is limited.3 Within serotype groups there is good protection, whereas cross-protection between different serotypes is generally poor.1 Effective control of HPS hinges on the use of autogenous or homologous commercial vaccines, strategic antimicrobial treatment, minimizing environmental stressors and reducing commingling of multiple sources.3 Appropriate molecular characterization of circulating field strains can aid in the development of improved HPS control efforts. The objective was to characterize HPS field strains by serotyping and virulence-associated PCR and o describe the distribution of serotypes and presence of the virulence-associated marker within HPS field isolates from different swine systems over a 2 year period.
