Rheological bitumen sliding joints are utilized for the elimination of friction in footing bottoms of areas affected by underground mining where horizontal terrain deformation is expected. At the Faculty of Civil Engineering,VSB-Technical University of Ostrava different types of asphalt belt have been tested since 2010. The influences of vertical and horizontal load and the effect of temperature in a temperature controlled room have been examined. Currently targeted heating of an asphalt belt used in a specimen of sliding joint was tested. Asphalt belt heating is provided by a power grid with electric resistance wire. A sliding joint specimen is exposed to a vertical and a horizontal load and heated repeatedly in stages. The test results are being used to prove wider utilization of a sliding joint e.g. to eliminate the horizontal friction in the case of foundation prestressing and also for mathematical modelling of soil-structure interaction. Sliding joints should contribute to the design of more durable and sustainable building structures.
