Pre-tertiary stratigraphy of the Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia

Relatively few Pre-Tertiary outcrop examples of the Tanimbar Islands have been described in the literature. Pre-Tertiary rocks outcrop at these islands is hardly found due to high levels of weathering and dense vegetation. This area needs a further geological work because this is one of the few areas near offshore of Arafura Sea where we can get Pre-Tertiary rocks outcrop analog for subsurface interpretation. This paper is aim to recognize the stratigraphic successions of the Pre-Tertiary sedimentary rocks exposed in the study area based on their lithological characteristic and palynological ages. The methods used are geological fieldwork and palynological analysis for samples obtained. Four lithostratigraphic units are recognized from the outcrops: 1) Late Triassic (Carnian-Norian) limestone, sandstone, and claystone of Wotar Formation with the depositional environment at the marine environment with storm influence. 2) Early to Middle Jurassic (Hettangian-Bajocian) sandstone and claystone of Selu Formation, that was deposited at the marine environment with tide influence. 3) Early Cretaceous (Berriasian-Barremian) red and brown claystone and siltstone of Arumit Formation which was deposited at an open-coast tidal flat setting, and 4) Early to Late Cretaceous (Aptian-Santonian) sandstone of Ungar Formation, which was deposited at an open-coast wave-dominated depositional environment. Uppermost Middle to Late Jurassic outcrop was not found in the studied area. This time interval is probably represented by the clay dominated matrix of mud volcano matrix.
