The nanostructures of ZnO and CdS, and ZnO/CdS nanocomposite were synthesized by a chemical method using zinc acetate dihydrate and cadmium acetate dihydrate as precursors. Water and ethanol mixture in 1:1 volume ratio was used as a solvent. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies showed the growth of hexagonal structured ZnO nanomaterials and cubic structured CdS nanomaterials. The grown ZnO/CdS nanostructures showed both hexagonal and cubic structures, indicating the formation of ZnO/CdS nanocomposite. The observation of FTIR peaks corresponding to Zn-O and Cd-S bonds confirms the formation of ZnO and CdS nanostructures. The surface morphological studies of the grown nanostructures were carried using Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and the elemental composition was characterized by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in the FESEM system. FESEM images of pure ZnO showed hexagonal plate-like nano/microstructures and ZnO/CdS nanocomposite showed nano-flake like structures. Optical absorption properties and photoluminescence properties were studied by UV-Visible absorption and Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, respectively. ZnO/CdS nanocomposite showed an enhanced absorption of light in the visible region, and hence, the ZnO/CdS nanocomposites may find suitable for photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications.
