Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga that has attracted interest due to its potential biotechnological applications, such as algal biofuel and therapeutic protein production. Despite all the advantages that this unicellular alga offers, the generation of useful transgenic algae strains has been the lack of effective molecular tools. Especially, the overall poor expression of heterologous genes from nuclear genome remains an obstacle for basic and applied research. The purpose of this study is to generate transgenic microalgae capable of long-term stable expression by site-specific gene integration based on Cre/loxP system.
