Development of Superconducting Joints for NMR Superconducting Magnet Application

To constructur persistent mode high-resolution NMR spectrometer magnets involving the use of Nb_3Sn and NbTi coils, joints with very low resistance must be used. We have recently developed several new Nb_3Sn-Nb_3Sn, NbTi-NbTi and Nb_3Sn-NbTi superconducting joint techniques for various Nb_3Sn and NbTi wires. In this paper, the joint fabrication process and test results are reviewed. Our test results indicate that the developed superconducting joint techniques can produce joints with the resistance on the order of 10~(-14) OMEGA and thus they can be used for the construction of presistent mode high-field NMR spectrometer and other magnet applications.
