Often supercondcuting magnets areoperated at a full (nominal) current briefly - during some portion of a whole time. In theses cases, liquid helium evaporation due to conventional gas-cooled current leads averaged over a duty cycle can be considerably reduced provided the leads are designed overloaded at a nominal current. Maximum overloading factor depends on the leads' material and the leads' acceptable maximum temperature, while optimum overloading factor (at which the time-averaged evaporation reaches its minimum) dependens also on a duty cycle. By detailed computer simulation, it is shown that gas-cooled current leads made from metal allows like brass possess larger acceptable overloading factor as compared to those made from relatively poure metal like copper.
