This paper aims to describe the application of Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) to the reality of a brazilian enterprise. Systemic practices are ways of putting to use systemic thought in the real world. The systemic practice SSM, as proposed by Checkland (1981) at the University of Lancaster (United Kingdom), is used in the resolution of ill defined problems, which often involve behavioral variables, and thus, cannot be addressed by the so called "hard methodologies". The SSM basically consists on the formulation of a conceptual model to a real situation, using the precepts of the systemic approach. This model works as basis for comparison with the reality, and shows as results, proposed changes that are both culturally viable and systemically desirable. In this paper, SSM is applied to the problematic of a middle market business, an auto supply distributor, whose managers consulted the authors of this paper as regards to proposing improvements in its performance. Following the SSM steps, such problems were dealt with under the framework of reality and compared to the systemic approach. As a result to this experiment, the authors were able to propose core changes in the attitudes, as groundwork to changes in structure and process.
