Indoor radon level are largely dependent on the indoor pressures and soil radon source potential. Positive indoor pressures are necessary to reduce indoor radon level by eliminating advection of radon throgh concrete slab cracks. However, negative pressure in mechanical rooms with large utility openings in the concrete slab can cause higher indoor radon concentration. Due to return leaks in mechanical rooms, air in the mechanical room with higher radon concentration can be redistributed into the conditioned space during HVAC system operation. Using an in-house computer model, the present paper examines the impact of indoor pressures and influence of the negative pressure in the mechanical room on indoor radon levels in a large building.
