A mathematical model of dual phase flow phenomena in the blast furnace trough was developed to investigate the effect of various operating parameters on the degree of slag/metal separation. Both two dimensional and three dimensional modeling were carried out. The efficiency of separation of slag from the primary metal phase was found to decrease with decreasing slag particle sizes, increasing volume fractions of slag and increasing throughputs of the melt tapped from the furnace. A sudden expansion in the width of the trough was found to result in a significant increase in the flotation of slag compared to that obtained in the original design of the trough.
