The trend of hard disk drive products is to high speed, small form-factors, and consumer electronics. The performance of the permanent magnet is thus critical to the characteristics of the spindle motor used in the hard disk drives. The role of the spindle motor in the development of hard disk drives is presented in the paper. The requirements on the spindle motor are discussed. Some solutions based on the high-performance permanent magnet are introduced to realize the advanced spindle motors for the new generation of hard disk drive products.
