摘要

This paper, based on field survey, will clarify the architectural characteristics of festival chariots in Isesaki of the Joshu province and try to assess them in the building history. Findings: the survey find, A group of festival chariots in Isesaki City, remaining mainly on the left riverbank of the Hirose River, were built primarily for a festival to pray for rain during the period from the Kaei era to early days of the Meiji era (around the middle of the 19th century). Each chariot is a temporary knockdown building consisting of a wooden framework with the one-span front side and the 2-span side and a Karahafu roof. These chariots are one of the provincial cultural properties with excellent architectural design in wooden decorative elements (relief carvings on the Oniita and transom) and are useful sources to find out their relationship with modern shrine architecture in the northern Kanto area, which took full advantage of wooden carvings. As these chariots are one of the indicators to show the rich cultural environment around that area, it is all-important to work out preservation measures not only to maintain a festival itself but also to inherit the knockdown systems and ways of maintenance for these chariots.
