Segments are key parts in continuous slab casting.They support all cast rolls,control thickness of the slab and lead during continuous casting machine when the shell leaves the mould.The fluctuation of roll gap that is caused by segment's deformation and install error directly is one of the main factors influencing slab quality.Recent researches and publications have focused on cast rolls and slab when the roll gap has been investigated.However,the Segment or its frame has been ignored.This paper describes an investigation into the deformation and stress of the segment and roll-gap fluctuation using ANSYS and MARC software.A three-dimensional model including up-down frames,casting rollers,cylinders,ball bearings and muti-body contact between them has been constructed and applied to case studies.Four typical working conditions that no-load online caster,casting load based on ideal-design roll-gap,casting load and half load based on initial measured roll-gap are also discussed.The analysis produces outputs such as rules of the roll-gap fluctuation under different roll gaps.The indications are that the segment has excellent adaptive characteristic.Finally,the theoretical basis for the optimism design of roll-layout has been suggested.
