Sequoyah Training Department, through benchmarking and pilot programs, has successfully implemented iPads in the Training programs to enhance the student's learning in classroom settings as well as cost saving from printed training materials. Instrumentation and Control training provided training on the surge test performed on the Ingersoll Rand Centrifugal Air Compressors (CENTAC). The CENTAC control theory was presented in the standard classroom format. To immediately reinforce the concepts the iPads were used to show a series of animated scenarios (see Figure 1). The animations showed inlet and bypass valve action. The technicians were asked to select, from a list of five statements, the statement which best described the animation shown. This reinforced how the CENTAC used the inlet and bypass valve to control the flow through the compressor and thus avoid compressor surge. Valve action during surge tests was also reinforced.
