Chilled Water Plant Optimization by Resetting the Condenser Water Temperature

The latest chilled water plant optimization effort at an Intel Corporation facility in Chandler, AZ, is the reset (increase or decrease) of the condenser water temperature based on outside air wet bulb conditions. The reset strategy increased the efficiency of the plant to an average of 0.85 KW/Ton from the baseline value of 0.9KW/Ton resulting in an operational cost savings of about $100K per year. During the colder winter nights, the plant efficiency peaks at 0.65 KW/Ton while efficiencies in the Spring, Summer, and Fall range between xxKW/Ton and yy KW/ton. Consequently, the project took advantage of the fact that lowering the condenser water set point temperature produces colder condenser return water which results in a more efficient chiller operation since less compressor work is required to provide the same cooling output.
