The spillway is the primary downstream migrant juvenile salmon passage route past The Dallesrndam. To improve juvenile fish passage survival through The Dalles spillway, the pier betweenrnSpillbays 8 and 9 will be extended approx imately 800 feet downstream (8/9 Spillwall). This willrncreate a safe conveyance channel for juvenile salmon to pass from the forebay basin and shelfrnto the main channel thalweg downstream of the dam. Biological studies suggest that thernprimary cause of low survival at The Dalles is predation, and significant percentages of juvenilernfish passing over the spillway end up in predator prone regions.rnThe location of the spillwall was determined in a 1:80 general physical model where dye wasrnused to evaluate downstream juvenile egress conditions. Hydraulic loads on the wall wererncomputed using the form drag equation and data collected from a 1:36 sectional model usedrnduring the original dam design effort in the 1950s. As a secondary check, momentum analysesrnwere also applied. The hydraulic loads were ultimately checked using a Computational FluidrnDynamics (CFD) model of the spillwall. The hydraulic loads from the CFD model were slightlyrnless than those computed using the form drag equation.rnThe methodology used to locate the spillwall and compute the hydraulic loads will be presentedrnand will include the comparison between the hydraulic loads.
