A pot experiment was designed to investigate the effects of metal pollution on yield and quality of vegetables. The soil tested was a grey chao soil (loamy) derived from Yangze river alluvium. Results indicated that on cadmium (Cd), or lead (Pb) polluted soil, the biomass, and vitamin C and sugar contents of pepper were decreased. The effects of combination-metal treatments, Cd treatment and Pb treatment dropped successively under the concentrations tested; metals influenced the biomass of pepper. Combination pollution of heavy metals reduced biomass, and the similar variation was observed to Cd treatment, while the Pb treatment increased pepper biomass to some extent. For radish, Cd treatments decreased the biological mass, whereas Pb treatment increased that of radish. Cadmium and Pb could decrease the contents of vitamin C remarkably in radish roots and the influences of Cd was more significant than Pb. Pollution of Cd or Pb solely in the soil could increase sugar content obviously. However, Cd and Pb combination pollution could depress the accumulation of saccharide in radish's root.
