In this paper a compact stub loaded modified plus shape microstrip antenna is proposed for broadband response. Enhancement in bandwidth is observed due to proximity of fundamental TM_(10) mode and higher order TM_(20) mode. Wider bandwidth of about 38% is achieved exhibiting broad side radiation pattern at the VSWR band edge frequencies with about 8dBi gain. The surface current distributions of the same configuration optimized at different lengths of stub and width of RMSA shows uni-directional behavior of currents. Also, comparison of simulated and measured gain plots of fabricated patches along with simulated gain plots of the antenna at different stub dimensions and widths of RMSA is presented. The measured and simulated radiation patterns and gain values showed high degree of agreement.
