Tribological Studies of Diamond Films on Tungsten Carbide Substrates

Polycrystalline diamond coatings were deposited onto the Co-cemented tungsten carbide (94wt.% WC-6wt. % Co) substrates via electron aided hot filament chemical vapor deposition (EAHFCVD). These diamond coatings have been tested in dry sliding against SiC particles reinforced aluminum-matrix composites by tribological pin-ondisc tests under a range of test conditions to evaluate the tribological performances of these polycrystalline chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond coatings. The tribological behaviour of diamond coatings is strongly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the surfaces in contact and by the texture of the coatings. When the influence of the environment on the friction coefficient of diamond coatings such as the interface adhesion, the sliding conditions as well as the load and the sliding velocity, the counter materials and the lubricated conditions were fixed by adopting the same parameters for pin-on-disc tribological tests and the same counter materials under an ambient atmospheric and non-lubricated conditions, the friction and wear of smooth CVD diamond films was mainly dependent on the surface morphology and roughness as well as the materials transfer from the counter materials to the diamond coatings. Thus, the quantitative relations between the friction coefficient of diamond film and the surface roughness under the actual cutting environment of diamond- coated tools was investigated in this paper, which will be beneficial to the optimization of diamond CVD process and engineering applications of diamond- coated tools in machining field.
