Effects of Friction and Lubrication of New Water-Based Nano-Graphite Lubricant and Application during Warm Extrusion Processing

A new nano-graphite water-based lubricant, named DN, is presented in this paper. This new lubricant is contrasted with a water-based micro-graphite lubricant, named D1, and a traditional graphite lubricant which has been used in actual forming, named D0. The comparison is done by means of two different friction test methods to assess the friction coefficients and the lubrication effects at warm forming temperatures. Also, a typical automobile steering flange part is chosen for warm extrusion. Both numerical simulation tests and actual forming tests are conducted in order to study the actual friction and lubrication effects of the three test lubricants. Then, the practical applications of the lubricants are studied through the SEM observation of the surface morphology of the formed parts. The test results show that the friction coefficient of the new water-based nano-graphite lubricant is 20% lower than the ordinary lubricant D0, and the friction and lubrication effects are better than that of the micro-graphite lubricant D1. It also shows the excellent lubrication performance during the warm extrusion processing of the test flange part.
