The Navy Technology Center for Safety andrnSurvivability (NTCSS) at the Naval ResearchrnLaboratory (NRL) has been studying shipboardrncompartment fire suppression in great detail to find arnsuitable replace for Halon 1301. 1,1,1,2,3,3,3rnHeptafluoropropane (HFP, HFC-227ea, C3HF7) hasrnbeen shown to be the best gaseous replacementrnwhile water mist has been shown to be the bestrnreplacement for the five adjacent machinery spacesrnin the LPD 17 based on space, weight, and cost.rnHFP is less efficient than Halon 1301 in firernextinguishment with more heat and hydrogenrnfluoride (HF) resulting. Through an extensivernprogram, the NTCSS has shown that a lowrntechnology water mist system called water sprayrncooling system (WSCS) improves the effectivenessrnof HFP by decreasing temperature and HF in totalrnflooding applications.
