Voltage-dependent Mobility Characterization of MDMO-PPV Thin-Film Transistors for Flexible Sensor Applications

Solution processed conjugated polymers such as poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-l,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) are excellent candidates for low-cost and large-area electronics. MDMO-PPV is a versatile semiconductor already employed in solar cells (1), light-emitting diodes (LED) (2) and transistors for active-matrix organic displays (AMOLED) (3). Organic Thin-Film Transistors (OTFTs) are very promising devices for the future of flexible electronics thanks to the low processing cost and light-weight (4), being used in applications such as woven electrotextiles (5) and in many branches of sensing (e.g. biomedical diagnosis, food quality monitoring, electronic tongues and noses) (6). TFTs based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) have already shown glucose sensing capability (6) and biocompatibility (7). Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) is another already available commercial material for achieving flexible sensors (8).
