The return of top soil has been used worldwide in reclamation programs of mined areas. The return of soil containing organic matter improves physical, chemical and biological conditions of the substrate and serves as source of biodiversity for the regeneration of the system. Besides the great importance of this procedure, strategic or economical factors sometimes limit its use. With the aim to evaluate the potential of nitrogen-fixing trees to revegetate mined areas without topsoil return, we carried out experiments in two different regions in Brazil: a bauxite mined area in the Amazon Region (Para State) and a gold mined area in the Cerrado Region (Minas Gerais State). More than thirty nodulating leguminous trees species were tested for an eight year period. Acacia holosericea, A. mangium, Sesbania virgata, Pseudosamanea guachapele, and Sclerolobium paniculatum presented high potential to improve the substrate, creating conditions for the successional process with great biodiversity of plant species. The importance of nodulated and mycorrhizal legume species are discussed in relation to substrate quality and sucessional biodiversity.
