Abstract: MPEG-4 is meant to be the integrating standard concerning multimedia in the future. This paper wants to highlight experiences from the participation in the EU project EMPHASIS the authors within a research institution being involved mainly in application definition and system integration. Based on this a general framework for system design comparison is outlined. !2
