Over recent years, more and more projects involving large diameter marine pipelines for waste water disposal, power plant coolingrnand desalination plants have been achieved.rnMany different designs have been developed in order to match the plant requirements and the site constraints. This leads to a largerndiversity in terms of pipeline diameter, length, material, diffuser, intake head, shore crossing method and installation method.rnThis paper is not exhaustively detailing all the possible variations but is describing three typical examples through projects carriedrnout by Geocean which give a good overview of the most common cases.rnThose projects are the following:rn1. Al Khalij power plant project (Libya):rn1.1 4 GRP Intakes pipelines 3m diameter, 1100m long each with concrete intake headsrn1.2 4 GRP Discharge pipelines 2.8m diameter, 500m long each with diffusers.rn1.3 Shore crossing done with temporary breakwatersrn2. Terga power plant project (Algeria):rn2.1 5 HDPE Intakes pipelines 2m diameter, 750m long each with steel intake headsrn2.2 Shore crossing done with open trench in rockrn3. Rabat Waste Water outfall project (Morocco):rn3.1 1 HDPE outfall pipeline 2m diameter, 1150m long with diffuser.rn3.2 Shore crossing done with tunnelling (800m)rnIn each case the process which leads to the choice of shore crossing and installation methods will be detailed and explained in orderrnto demonstrate that large diameter pipeline projects are not just bigger version of small ones but present complex engineering,rnenvironmental and construction challenges which require experienced contractors and Engineers.
