A simple yet effective model atomic force microscope is presented for the purpose of introducing students to the field of scanning probe microscopy. The model is used to demonstrate the basic characteristics of the atomic force microscope by realistically simulating the operation of the actual instrument. Students acquire data by first using the model to scan small objects, then use a spreadsheet program to generate one, two and three-dimensional images based on the scan data. Comparisons between these images and the physical objects allow students to immediately observe how various instrumental parameters, or changes in parameters, such as sampling number or tip size, affect the resultant images. Differences in the observed images can then be used to promote discussion on other important topics such as image calibration, lateral vs. vertical resolution and tip effects.
