Carbon fibers and carbon-carbon composites are prominent materials amongst carbon products developed during the twentieth century. Intensive research efforts have gone into the development of these materials, to modify the raw materials and processes especially to make these economically viable for general purpose applications. The basic and important component, the matrix precursor pitch, has been modified by thermal treatment and has been characterised by FTIR, thermal analysis, coking value, etc. The modification resulted in increase in aromaticity of the pitch and hence the increase in softening point to about 175 deg C, coke yield to 60percent. One shot high density carbon-carbon composites with high mechanical properties have been developed using this pitch as matrix precursor and general purpose carbon fibers as reinforcement.
