Particulate Leaching of Galena and Manganese Nodule in Hydrochloric Acid Medium

Hydrochloric acid leaching of galena (PbS) and manganese nodule in combination was studied using ground samples. Galena, dissolved 1 M HCI because of non-oxidative dissolution, but the dissolution improved in presence of manganses nodule because of oxidative dissolution. Rate of dissolution of metal values from the nodule also got enhanced in presence of galena. Oxidative dissolution was found to occur through three routes such as (a) galvanic interaction between PbS and M_nO_2, (b) action of Fe~(3+) / Fe~(2+) redox couple and (c) action of Cl_2 gas generated from M_nO_2-HCl reaction on PbS. The last one appeared to have the minor contribution to the dissolution, galvanic interaction being effective only at higher solids concentration. Combined leaching of nodule and galena appears to be promising from both technical and economical point of view.
