The steel making in Integrated Steel plant is carried out in several unit processes each producing one or other by-products many of which are rich in iron, flux and fuel value. Dumping of these costs money, indicates improper utilisation of natural resources, causes deterioration of environment and puts it in the category of waste. Recycling of these converts waste into value. The environmental awareness and recognition of the mineral values in wastes have resulted in attempts of its recycling and recovering the associated mineral up to the extent possible. Sinter plant, which originally was developed to convert the waste iron ore fines into blast furnace feed further offers for converting steel plant wastes into value by allowing recycling of a large number of wastes in various quantities through sinter without appreciably impairing its performance and product quality. Among by-products of steel plant the LD slag figures predominantly for its bulk, mineral value and cost saving potential. The high lime content of this material makes it an ideal replacement for limestone. Besides calcium oxide the reasonably high content of iron oxide makes it further attractive. The phosphorus content is coming in the way as a restricting parameter for its use. Utilisation of LD slag decreases the cost of sinter produced and hence the cost of steel made. Today almost all the steel plants of the world are utilising LD slag as a replacement of limestone in sintermaking feed material. Present paper outlines its generation, characterisation, the quantity being utilised through sinter at Tata Steel and discusses its influence on sintering and highlights the technical problems, which restricts its further recycling.
