THE HEAVY METALS AND SULPHUR STATUS OF AGRICULTURAL SOILS IN POLAND

1. The mean content of cadmium, copper, nickel, lead and zinc in the 0-20 cm layer of agricultural soils in Poland is respectively: 0.22, 6.5, 6.3, 13.7 and 32.5 mg/kg of soil. These values are lower than in most other countries of Europe and the world. 2. More than 78% of the agricultural soils in Poland show a natural (0°) content of heavy metals. Soils with an increased (Ⅰ°) content of heavy metals constitute 18.0%. Soils that guarantee production of raw plant materials with quality parameters occupy 97% of the agricultural land on total. About 3.0% of all soils are polluted with heavy metals to various degrees (Ⅱ°-Ⅴ°). These soils do not create any major problem for Polish agriculture and do not significantly influence the quality of agricultural products in Poland. 3. Mineral soils of agricultural land in Poland contain on average 1.82 mg S-SO_4/100 g. 4. About 57% of the agricultural soils in Poland show a natural (0°) content of sulphate (S-SO_4), whereas heavy sulphate polluted soils (3°) contribute only 3.9%. Soils with slightly increased (1°) sulphate content and weakly polluted with this element occupy, respectively 25.4 and 13.7% of the agricultural land. 5. The perception that Polish agricultural soils are heavily polluted by heavy metals and sulphate (S-SO_4) is not confirmed by this study. In fact, this perception is directly contradicted by the results presented here wich are based on the most thorough sampling exercise undertaken in Poland (40.500 samples). Some areas of agricultural soils with various degree of pollution by heavy metals and sulphate do occurs mainly in the industrialised areas of southern and south-western parts of Poland.
