The principles of Magneto-Optical Recording (MOR) on magnetic thin films are reviewed, in particular the thermomagnetic writing and readout process. MOR in continuous media is first considered. Required performances on high density recording materials are summarised and the specificity of the successive generations of MOR media discussed. Recent and future technological improvements are shortly reported. The second part will be devoted to patterned MOR media. Their advantages with respect to continuous films are underlined together with limitations for high recording densities. Nano-fabrication of magnetic media is shortly presented, and a special emphasis is dedicated to the ion beam "magnetic" patterning method. An overlook on the realisation and first studies of high density storage patterned media, such as "Quantum Magnetic Disk" structures, is given. Results on the nucleation process and the effect of dipolar interactions on the magnetic switching of assemblies of magnetic dots are finally reported.
