Hydrogenated amorphous silicon solar cells have been realized in both a p-i-n configuration on Corning glass substrates, and a n-i-p configuration on stainless steel substrates. The performance degradation of the two kinds of cells under solar illumination has been examined over a 140 hour period. During degradation, the two devices have been kept under load in the maximum power condition that is normally used in a solar plant. The performance of the Coming glass deposited device exhibited a higher rate of degradation than did that of the other cell. A discussion of the possible reasons for this behaviour is given.
