The materials to be used as scaffolds in tissue engineering must fulfill a number of complex requirements, such as, biocompatibility, appropriate porous structure, mechanical properties and suitable surface chemistry. The selection of the most appropriate polymer to produce the scaffold is a very important step towards the construction of the tissue engineered product since its intrinsic properties will determine in a great extent the properties of the scaffold. However, the method of producing these scaffolds will deeply influence its final characteristics, as it cm dramatically change the type and amount of porosity, the mechanical and degradation behavior, the surface properties and even the biocompatibility of the scaffold mate rial. Several polymers and different processing techniques are beeing studied to produce tissue engineering scaffolds, which, combined with the app opriate type of cells may constitute an effective alternative treatment to mal-functioning organs or tissues, with a dramatic impact on the health and quality of life of patients world-wide. This paper describes our research on tissue engineering using starch based blends and several different and innovative processing methods that are used to produce tissue engineering scaffolds. Preliminary results with osteoblastic cells are also presented.
