An overview of the recent modeling efforts directed on interpretation of observed features of transient luminous events (TLEs) termed sprites, blue jets, blue starters and gigantic jets is presented. The primary emphasis is placed on discussion of similarity properties of gas discharges and interpretation and classification of the observed features of TLEs in the context of previous experimental and theoretical studies of gas discharges of various types. Some of the currently unsolved problems in the theory of TLEs are also discussed.
