Innovation in the design of futurerncockpits is strongly envisioned in the VIIrnFramework Programme of the EuropeanrnCommission. A major challenge is recognisedrnin the definition of advanced HMI (HumanrnMachine Interface) architectures,rnimplementing technologies that provide allconditionrncapabilities.rnIn order to clarify the task and start thernearly phase of new concepts definition wernneed to identify the fundamental technologiesrnwhich are currently available on the market orrnare under experimentation in the majorrnindustrial and academic research centres. Tornthis aim, SVEs/EVEs (Synthetic VisionrnEnvironments and Enhanced VisionrnEnvironments) are investigated in this paper,rnconsidering their capability of meeting allrnconditions requirements and providingrnadequate SA (Situation Awareness) levels.rnMoreover, we present a ranking of suchrntechnologies from the user’s point of view.rnThe pilot’s perception of all-conditionsrnoperations concept and opinions on thernoperative advantages of candidaterntechnologies are collected in a focus group.rnFor this purpose new HMI concepts arernsimulated in our Virtual Reality Lab.
