Production of rice whole-crop silage (WCS) in Japan has been promoted since the late 1990s with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency of feed supply by us ing excess paddy field. Since 1999, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan has been conducting a research project on the use of rice as WCS. One of the main objectives of this pro ject is to develop special rice cultivars suitable for low-cost WCS production.
